Newhaven AGM

Jason Sugarman Conservative parliamentary candidate for Newhaven made a sincere commitment when he attended the local branch annual general meeting on Monday 1st March at the Conservative club in Newhaven. Thanking local activists for their hard work over the last year, Jason updated the growing group on his campaign and reported back from the Conservative Spring Conference where the six pledges were made that will be delivered for our area if the Conservatives are elected at the general election.

Jason commented

`Newhaven branch has worked very hard this year. We have notched up some good success stories and new appointments of ex Lib Dem councillor Robbie Robertson and activist Rita Scarfe, the committee is now very strong and determined to make a difference in Newhaven.

It is imperative that Newhaven people vote for change, because we all feel let down and left behind in this community. The Liberal Democrats have imposed a 16 percent local tax increase when other Conservative councils are cutting taxes. Increasing taxes in a community that has lost its major employer- Parker Pens and where many local shops have closed does not help. This town needs hope and investment to face the future.

I am determined to help with the regeneration in Newhaven. There is a huge opportunity for Newhaven, which I have discussed with Theresa Villiers MP, Oliver Letwin MP, and David Cameron MP on their visits to the constituency. We need an innovative solution-Chatham was in a similar situation but when they attracted Enterprise Zone Trust status they developed and secured huge funding for a Dickens World theme park, new shopping centre and industrial park. Newhaven deserves the same attention.

We need to bring investment and jobs to Newhaven; the current MP has failed to deliver not only for Newhaven, but right across the constituency. Bringing much needed funding to our area will be my priority if elected ’.

The Conservatives have pledged, vote for change and the Conservatives will:

  1. Act now on debt to get the economy moving.  Deal with the deficit more quickly than Labour so that mortgage rates stay lower for longer with the Conservatives.
  2. Get Britain working by boosting enterprise. Cut corporation tax rates, abolish taxes on the first ten jobs created by new businesses, promote green jobs, and get people off welfare and into work.
  3. Make Britain the most family-friendly country in Europe. Freeze council tax and raise the basic state pension, recognise marriage in the tax system and back couples in the benefits system, support young families with extra health visitors, and fight back against crime.
  4. Back the NHS. Increase spending on health every year, and make the NHS work for patients not managers.
  5. Raise standards in schools. Give teachers the power to restore discipline, and create new smaller schools.
  6. Change politics. Reduce the number of MPs, cut Whitehall and quangos by a third, and let taxpayers see where their money is being spent.
