NHS

issue-nhs

I want a strong NHS that provides first class healthcare to all, free at the point of need. Labour upped our taxes promising to improve the NHS, but is now shutting down local hospital services. This “tax and axe” approach is the worst of both worlds – we pay more and get less. I will defend our local hospitals as will David Cameron who has promised that a Conservative government will end the damage to hospitals in Sussex. I’m a keen supporter of St Peter & St James Hospice and would like to see hospices given more support by government. Find out more about how the Conservatives will improve the NHS

Environment

issue-environmentJason Sugarman wants more recycling and greater investment in green technology but no green taxes without cuts in other taxes. Jason Sugarman believes we must do more to protect our world. We need to move from using fuels that cause global warming to using energy sources that are cleaner and greener. He wants recycling levels in our area improved, particularly in the Lewes district where the Lib Dems have left us with one of the worst recycling results in Sussex. The Conservatives will take the action needed to protect our environment, improve energy security and decrease our reliance on oil. And a Conservative government will offset any rise in green taxes with a equal cut in taxes on families.

Education

issue-educationJason Sugarman wants to see every school in our area modernised and wants schools to have more professional freedom. Improving our children’s education is a top priority. Jason Sugarman also wants to see more school buildings modernised and schools reformed to better serve our children. We need an education system that unlocks the talent of every child – rich and poor. We cannot allow the scandal of an education system that deepens divisions in society. We need to give parents more power and control over their children’s education. A Conservative government will do this and will change funding rules to ensure poorer children do not lose out in our education system. A Conservative government will do more to improve school discipline and to stop the health and safety culture that stops children going on out of school trips and makes education dull. We will tackle the bureaucracy that undermines teaching and stop the closure of special schools.

Crime

issue-crimeJason Sugarman wants our police to be freed from the paperwork that stops them doing their job and Labour’s ineffectual ID cards plan scrapped. Labour is failing us on crime. Violent crime has soared, policing has been distorted by endless paperwork and misguided government targets and our prisons are so full ministers are letting criminals go free early. Jason Sugarman works as a criminal barrister and every day he sees the consequences of crime – the pain caused to victims and the life thrown away by offenders. He wants effective policing and an end to Labour’s crime policy gimmicks like ID cards, which will cost billions and prove ineffectual while eroding our freedoms. A Conservative government will take the action needed to reduce crime. We will build more prisons, ending early release and making efforts to ensure prisoners don’t return to a life of crime are more effective.

Tax

issue-taxJason Sugarman wants the tax burden reduced and taxes on families replaced by taxes on pollution. Jason Sugarman wants to see our nation’s tax burden reduced. He is concerned at how Labour has raised our taxes and made our nation less competitive as our international rivals lower their taxes. He is also angry at Gordon Brown’s decision to double income tax for the lowest earners from April 2008. A Conservative government would share the proceeds of economic growth between extra investment in public services and reductions in taxes. The Conservatives will change the tax system from taxing families to taxing pollution. We will change inheritance tax rules so only millionaires pay. We will abolish stamp duty for nearly every first time buyer to help mend the property ladder. These changes will be paid for by a levy on foreigners living in the UK who pay no tax. We will make taxes simpler, fairer and lower.

EU Constitution

issue-euJason Sugarman wants the British people to have their say on the EU constitution, which will hand more powers over to Brussels. In their 2005 election manifesto Labour promised the British people a referendum on the EU constitution. Gordon Brown has broken this promise and now intends to force through the constitution without consulting the British people. The constitution – now rebranded a treaty but still the same – will hand even more control over the decisions affecting our lives to Brussels. It will do little to address the lack of democracy in the EU but will create a EU president and foreign minister. It will create a EU police force immune from legal action and give Brussels more control over policies on defence, employment and public services. Jason Sugarman and the Conservative Party wants a referendum on the consitution
